SHE HAD TO GET A NEW CAR

Gloria

As a single mother of six who works in ministry, finances have always been tight for Jo. Having owned her car for fifteen years, she was hoping it might lurch through a couple more. At this point in her life, she simply didn’t have any room in the budget for a new car payment, and barely any loose change to scrounge up in order to buy a junker. With options limited and time of the essence, Jo let go of her pride and sent out an email to friends and co-workers to see if anyone had an old car they’d sell her for cheap. Of those who received the email, one woman felt God tug on her heart when she read Jo’s cry for help. So she talked with her husband. After prayer and thought, convicted by the opportunity and the way God had always provided for them, they decided to give their 98 Ford Escort to Jo.
When the couple spoke with Jo, she was ecstatic. As Jo put it to me, “I went out to look at [the car] and thought it was just perfect! [The couple] said they wanted to take it home and clean it up and would give it to me on Monday and that they wanted to pay all the transfer fees, taxes etc.  How great is our God!  I was totally overwhelmed.”

However, God wanted to take things even farther.

On the day Jo was to receive her new car, she walked with the couple outside and saw the 98 Escort. As the husband was telling her more info about the car, he finished with, “But you are not getting that car. You are getting this one.” He pointed to a 2001 Taurus parked in the adjacent spot. The couple had prayed more and decided that they were going to give Jo the Taurus instead. It was newer, in better condition, and had a lower mileage, which meant it would last longer and run better, and they knew God wanted Jo to have it.

The story came to my attention because the couple had been convicted by the Not A Fan series, and both felt called as followers of Christ to give Jo their nicer car. Ecstatic over her new car, Jo later explained to me, “It is a beautiful car.  Our God is truly a ‘One-Better God’ Talk about overwhelmed. I really can’t explain it.  My car had limited where I could go—it was unsafe to drive and I would always have to think about that before accepting invitations. This car is truly a blessing from God. I only hope that one day I can help someone else and bless them as I have been blessed.”

One member of the couple wrote to me, “I don’t think I realized that being a fan was not really enough until [the Not a Fan] teaching showed me the difference between a fan and a follower. Before, I would have said I am going to try and be a follower, knowing I’m going to fall down. But now I am saying that I am a follower because even though that puts it out there, trying just isn’t good enough.”

I’m sure there are stories like this that happen all the time, and most of them won’t end up on this blog. But know this, God’s people are starting to realizing that actually following Jesus means living and loving differently. May we all keep our hearts softened and our ears open for whatever God wants to do through us today.

What an amazing story. It is also incredible, what the Lord can do, if we only listen to the teachings we are fed every weekend by our leaders and God’s servants. Thank you God for such blessings!

  14. One of the things I like about blog articles is that often they trigger an idea in my head. The moment that happens, I feel as I must comment hoping it’s interesting to some people. Considering the fact that there are so many personal blogs with totally different points of view, they test your perception. It is at these occasions when you have good insignt others might not have had, together with the blogger him/herself. I find myself coming back to your web site because you have some excellent insights and you are already at this a while, and that is very inspiring and tells me you know a lot. Keep triggering imagination in other people!
