Death by Pancakes

pancakes

There is an interesting website called www.soulpancake.com. It was started by the guy who plays Dwight on the TV show The Office (His real name is Rainn Wilson. But I’ll stick with Dwight because it sounds more real than Rainn and that’s how he will forever be thought of and typecast.) Turns out that before selling paper at Dunder Miflin, the real Dwight studied religion at Harvard.
He started the website because he wanted to facilitate discussions about God, art, creativity. A place to “chew on life’s big questions.” Both believers (Wilson is a Baha’i) and non-believers have flocked to the site, which launched in March of this year and already has over 1 million hits. For a website aimed specifically at theological and philosophical discussion, that’s pretty impressive.
I spent some time reading the dozens of questions that were asked and then discussed. Here’s a few examples:
- What is “true” really?
- Do you believe in enlightenment?
- Do people get what they deserve?
- Can religion and science coexist?
- Why does life feel like a never-ending maze?
- Aren’t all religions basically the same?
- Does God really pay any attention to our prayers?
- Why do Christians think everyone else is wrong?
- Would you prefer to have a girlfriend that you love or eat at P.F. Changs free for life? (that one was free.)
- How long can a goldfish survive in lemonade? (again…free).
There is a lot of “chewing on life’s big questions” but not much swallowing. As I browsed the website it’s obvious that there are many hungry souls. But the questions and discussion seems to do little to satisfy that hunger. The growling seems to only grow stronger. Pancakes with butter and syrup served by Dwight from The Office still don’t satisfy. I’m hoping that the discussions and questions will lead people from pancakes to the “Bread of Life.” That’s how Jesus described Himself. John 6:35 reads, Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.
Fans tend to see Jesus as a side dish rather than the main course. Followers find their satisfaction in Him alone.
Ask yourself:
1. What are some pancakes that promise satisfaction but leave your soul malnourished?
2. What are some of life’s big questions that you are chewing on?
Is scripture where you’re searching for the answers?

I mostly use Konqueror browser (no idea if that matters), and far too many internet sites are tricky to read on account of a careless range of colours employed ithe design. In your case, as the choice of colors is fine, the design is quite tidy and simple to read. I am not sure whether it was a intentional and kind deed, or just sheer chance, but just the same, thanks.
